WORKS LEFT IN THE ATELIER

Atelier Estate

This archive was initiated after the artist’s death to prevent the body of work left in her home and studio from losing its larger form.

The works were not systematically managed for exhibition or sale. While working as an art teacher, Yoko Nakamura painted with an energy that could feel like vitality and anger driven directly into the surface, and stacked completed works throughout the studio. Long-term storage has left some paintings with dirt, abrasions, cracking, or loosened supports.

Many works retain no recorded date or original title. Titles published here are provisional titles assigned by the family for cataloguing and were not necessarily given by the artist. Dimensions, condition, signatures, and reverse-side information will be updated as each object is examined.

Because the family house is being cleared, not every physical work can be preserved in one location. Photography and catalogue numbers therefore recover the estate digitally first, allowing the artist’s wider practice to remain traceable even as representative works are conserved, transferred, or sold.

Initial publication
The current archive contains 44 paintings. Ceramics, calligraphy, uncatalogued paintings, and related materials will be added as documentation continues.
